COOPER COLLECTION
This backpack collection was designed to fit into the existing signature Cooper Collection, which already consisted solely of messenger bags. The collection was already well established in the photo industry and I was excited to work on this project given its reputation for upscale materials and hardware.
There are two backpacks in this group, designed for both mirrorless and DSLR camera kits. For both versions, there is a discreet bottom compartment that holds camera gear separate from personal items. Having used this final product on my own trips, I can safely say it makes a great travel companion!
Co-Designed with Tenba Design Director, Julie Krug. Photography by Jeff Dietz.
PREEXISTING COLLECTION
This is a more luxurious collection for Tenba, starting at a higher price point. The materials are distinct to the collection, including high quality canvas fabric and leather accents.
INITIAL IDEATION
I knew I wanted to highlight the leather accent material in some way with this collection’s addition, so I focused on exploring options for my initial concept sketches.
SELECTED CONCEPT
-
Minimal design with elevated, luxurious details that match existing collection themes, hardware and materials
Discreet fully leather bottom camera compartment is protected from the elements during travel
Soft touch leather zipper pullers, hidden back passport pocket and interior organization conveys thoughtfulness in design
FIRST TECHNICAL SPEC PACKET
The most challenging portion of sampling was getting the interior camera insert to be the correct size and shape. Luckily, utilizing the Cooper messenger dimensions for mirrorless and DSLR cameras helped guide this section of the project.
FIRST SAMPLE
Modify shape to add structure, eliminate slouching
Modify shoulder straps for increased comfort following sample testing
Explore branding options to complete look
SECOND TECHNICAL SPEC PACKET
Revisions were direct and I found this good practice to refine how clearly I communicate revision notes to the factory.
SECOND SAMPLE
I completed a final test of camera gear to confirm camera compartment size. Additionally, there were small construction details that needed to be revised before sample can be approved.
FINAL TECHNICAL SPEC PACKET
Refine zipper hood so it does not flap upwards at each end
Remove binding on shoulder straps to increase comfort
Double check both DSLR and mirrorless camera sizes are correct before production approval
IN-PRODUCTION CHANGES
HIDDEN PASSPORT POCKET
REMOVABLE PADDED CAMERA INSERT
